Product Info

This low-cost BDM pod resembles a USB memory stick in size and shape, and is USB 2.0-compliant. It is based on the open-source USBDM project featured in the Freescale Community Projects Forum, and supports S08, S12(X), and ColdeFire V1 core targets, via a standard 6-pin BDM cable. It is fully compatible with CodeWarrior and NoICE, once you have installed the relevant DLLs. Power is derived from the host USB port, which can also power the target board at a jumper-selectable 3V or 5V, if desired.

Features:

  • works with all S08, S12(X), and CF V1 target boards
  • no power supply required-- draws power from USB port
  • power for target board can come from USB or your own supply
  • selectable voltage for powering target: 3.3V, 5V, or none
  • USB interface to Windows PC
  • standard 6-pin BDM cable plugs into target BDM connector
  • compatible with all Adapt12/9S12 boards, neCore12, NanoCore12, and Esduino
  • compatible with CodeWarrior development suite and NoICE12 debugger
  • find links to schematic, USB driver, CodeWarrior & NoICE DLLs, and application notes by clicking the Resources tab, above

Getting USBDMLT Up and Running on Your System:

You'll find the SourceForge project files on which USBDMLT is based at: http://sourceforge.net/projects/usbdm/files/

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. In the latest version folder, navigate to the subfolder called Installation_4_x and download the _Win.msi file (or Linux, if that's what you're using. We'll assume Windows for the remainder of this discussion). You don't need the JS16_Bootloader msi.
  2. Run the MicroSoft Installer (i.e. .msi file). It takes care of installing the USB driver, utilities, etc.
  3. Plug USBDMLT into an available USB port, and use the Windows Start feature to select the utility you want to run. Usually, it would be the 9S08 programmer, the HCS12 programmer, or possibly the firmware updater. Note that you can't use USBDMLT to work with CF v2, 3, or 4, DSC, RS08, or ARM. They will be supported by a future BDM pod (coming soon).
  4. If you have an earlier version of USBDMLT and want to update its firmware, run the FirmwareUpdater and check the AutoUpdate box. Then click Program and follow the prompts. If it fails, uncheck AutoUpdate and click on Load Source File and then navigate to the pgo installation subfolder containing the flash image (something like C:/Program Files/pgo/USBDM 4.9.4/FlashImages/JS16). Once there, select the file called USBDM_JS16CWJ_V4.sx and click OK. Then click on the Program Flash button. Follow the instructions to complete the update.

The standalone programming utilities are great for use in a production environment, where you don't have or need a CodeWarrior installation. For example, HCS12_FlashProgrammer can be used to erase/flash/verify a .sx file in a target board, all in one automated sequence-- just click "Yes" to program another. As of V4.9, the newer S12XE and S12XS variants are fully supported!
